November - 2004
When
in Rome…
On 17 November 2004 Sister Elizabeth Dodds, our congregational leader,
travelled to Rome for the UISG international
Congress With a Passion for Christ and Passion for Humanity, which
was held from 23 to 27 November. Participants included leaders of religious
congregations of women and men and a large group of younger religious.
As its name implies, the Congress theme reflected the dual commandment to “love
the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind; and
love your neighbour as yourself” (Deut 5:24). To enliven this message,
the Congress chose the Gospel characters of the Samaritan Woman and the Good
Samaritan.
Two of the preliminary presentations picked up this theme directly:
- Seekers of Wells and Paths: Two Icons for Consecrated Life,
Dolores
Aleixandre rscj
- From the Well to the Inn: Feedback on the Congress Working
Paper, led by Bruno Secondin OCarm & Diana Papa osc.
The keynote presentations were:
- Timothy Radcliffe op, Religious Life after September 11: What
signs do we offer?
- Sandra Schneiders ihm, Religious Life in the Future.
Bringing
Reconciliation to Reality
At St
Vincent’s College, Potts Point on 18 November 2004, a celebration
took place involving the College community and several special guests.
Here, in the words of Michele Hugonnet, the College Principal, is
a brief description of the event.
“Last Wednesday we gathered with our guests to celebrate the
spirit of the Cadigal tribe of the Eora people and the spirituality
of the Sisters of Charity. We symbolised the oneness of these two
beautiful spiritualities and our sharing of the land at Potts Point
by bringing some symbols from the sacred space of the Chapel and
by unveiling a plaque at the grotto. The plaque is a reminder to
us to be guided by our spirit ancestors, to embrace the Dreamtime
in our lives each day, and to care for our country. We can do this
by overcoming the barriers that divide our nation, forgiving those
that wrong us, better understanding each other, and helping each
other to build a world community of peace based on truth, justice,
love and freedom.”
