Welcome to World Youth Day Pilgrims

Bethlehem Convent Blessing

Bethlehem Convent, Ashfield, has long been a “house of bread” for Sisters of Charity. On April 6, 2008 after a five month period of renovation and extension Srs Elizabeth Dodds, Congregational Leader and Jean Montgomery, Community Leader led the assembled group of Sisters in calling down a blessing using the rich and relevant words of John O’Donohue’s For the New Home from Benedictus – published in 2007.

Gathering 2005

About one hundred Sisters of Charity participated in our Gathering 2005 from 22nd -25th July. The remaining ninety-six Sisters supported the gathering as prayer partners. So, in person or in spirit, we met over these four days, at Baulkham Hills NSW, close to our founding ministry at the 19th century womens prison Parramatta.

Sister Claire Nolan RSC

It is with great sadness that I inform all our communities, friends and colleagues of the Sisters of Charity of Australia of the death of our sister, Claire Nolan, Congregational Councillor. Claire died peacefully within our community home, Tarmons Terrace, 2 Rockwall Crescent, Potts Point on Sunday evening, 6 February 2005. Claire exercised her ministry as an elected member of our Council and a Trustee of the Sisters of Charity of Australia from 8 December 2002.

When in Rome…

On 17 November 2004 Sister Elizabeth Dodds, our congregational leader, travelled to Rome for the UISG international Congress With a Passion for Christ and Passion for Humanity, which was held from 23 to 27 November. Participants included leaders of religious congregations of women and men and a large group of younger religious.

St Vincent's Institute, Melbourne

On Friday April 2, the new St Vincent 's Research Building was officially opened at 9 Princes Street , Fitzroy. The Institute originated when Dr Pehr Edman, one of the world's leading biochemists, took up his appointment as the John Holt Director of Research in May 1957 and the St Vincent 's School of Medical Research was officially opened on 23 April 1958

Irish Pilgrimage continues

The second of the ‘pilgrimages’ organised by the Sisters of Charity in Ireland took place 7-14 July. From all reports, the experience was just as exciting and enriching as the first. The final pilgrimage was scheduled for 7-14 August. These occasions have been a wonderful opportunity for bringing together the daughters of Mary Aikenhead scattered throughout the world.

Irish Heritage trip

The Sisters of Charity in Ireland have organised a series of three congregational 'pilgrimages' to take place at Maynooth in April, July and August of this year. They have graciously offered to host nine sisters from the Australian congregation. Next Tuesday, April 6, two sisters will leave for Dublin where they will take part in the first of these gatherings.

Feastday of Mary Aikenhead
--Thursday, 1 July 2004
On July 22, 1857, Mary Aikenhead died at the motherhouse convent in Harolds Cross Dublin. It was the feast of St Mary Magdalene for whom she had a special regard and whose intercession she often sought. At her requiem, a group of Dublin workmen considered it a privilege to carry her coffin. The epitaph inscribed on her grave sums up her life’s mission:
