Congregational Leader and Council

At our 28th General Chapter early in March 2021, after a period of discernment by the delegates:

Laureen Dixon was elected as Congregational Leader, with councillors Libbey Byrne, Adele Cottrell-Dormer, Margaret Guy, and Teresita Marcelo.

The Chapter was delayed by a few months due to COVID, also making for a very short hand-over period. Their ministry of leadership began on March 25, 2021 and is a 6 year appointment

Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor

On July 1, 2017 the sisters of Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor came under the aegis of the Congregational Leader and Council of the Sisters of Charity of Australia.

During the Eucharist on that day, Bishop Randazzo addressed Sr Margaret Mary Birgan OLN,

“Margaret Mary, you and your sisters have formally decided at your chapter to accept the Congregational Leader of the Sisters of Charity of Australia as your new Congregational Leader, responsible for governance, administration and pastoral care. Do you now conjure this decision and its formalisation today?”

Margaret Mary answered, “We do!”

Mary Aikenhead, foundress of the Sisters of Charity and Eileen O’Connor, foundress of Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor each had a deep and abiding faith in God, a special devotion to Our Lady and a heart and commitment for the poor and underserved in our community.

Our Lady’s Nurses for the Poor are hoping that Eileen O’Connor will be named Australia’s second saint. Work on her cause is progressing and we pray if this be God’s will it will come to pass.
